  • About this winery

Aldo Conterno was born in 1931, the second son of Giacomo Conterno; his family had been winegrowers in Piemonte for five generations. He left Italy in 1954 with the intention of establishing a winery in the Napa Valley with two uncles who lived in San Francisco. • Tasting notes

A recognizable Nebbiolo on the nose with dark cherry, strawberry, baking spices, licorice and a touch of violet. There are menthol and mineral notes here as well as cedar and a hint of leather. Tart cherry, licorice and spice are also evident on the full-bodied palate, They are complimented by grilled herb, tobacco and fine, silky tannins. The finish is long with lingering spice, this wine is full of character and will only improve with time.

  • Viticultural notes

The Cicala (balm-cricket) vineyard is located in Bussia of Monforte d’Alba, in the heart of Barolo country. The Nebbiolo vines are mainly Lampia variety and while they are replanted from time to time most are 40-45 years old. A true expression of Langa Terroir, soils are composed of limestone, layers of sand and clayey-calcareous, rich with calcium carbonate and iron. The vineyard is positioned 350 - 400 m. above sea level with South & South/West aspects. Harvest occurs in Mid-October and is done exclusively by hand with a very careful fruit selection.

  • Winemaking notes

To obtain the rich complexion of the wine, the must is kept in contact with skins for 30 days in stainless steel vats. During this time, fermentation is completed at a range of temperatures with a peak of 32̊ Celsius. The new wine is decanted several times before being moved to oak casks for ageing and refining. Following a strict family tradition, red wines are neither clarified nor filtered.

    March 2016

This is fantastic with cedar, strawberry, walnut and mineral aromas and flavors. Ultra-fine tannins and a clean finish. Balanced and refined. Why wait? But will be even better in 2018.

    April 2017

A contemporary style, with a solid base of tannins providing support for macerated cherry, licorice, tobacco, iron and spice flavors. Burly and rangy, but with plenty of character and a long, spicy aftertaste.
