Weingut Molitor is one of Germany's greatest wine producers. Markus Molitor took over the winery in 1984, at only 20 years of age. He represents the eighth generation of his centuries-old Mosel winemaking family. The estate is centered in the historic town of Bernkastel, with 37 hectares of spectacular vineyards spread across 15 classic sites from Bernkastel and Graach to Wehlen and Zeltingen. This is viticulture at its most extreme, with very old ungrafted vines (many 100 years old or more)...
The white capsule for Markus Molitor wines indicates that it is a drier style for the winery.
Covering less than 20 hectares this top Middle Mosel site has mainly very old, ungrafted vines (often more than 80 years old) with fine but also very stony, slate soils. The oldest and best plots are often located on small terraces with very little soil, producing very low yields with exceptional quality.
All Molitor Wines are made by spontaneous fermentation. The use of improving agents or industrial yeasts is refrained from. Molitor wines are fermented at low temperature slowly over months. The wines are then left to lie for several more months on the fine yeast to give them bloom and depth. Alongside maturation in stainless steel tanks, the wines are fermented and matured in large oak barrels to ensure an especially natural flavour.

The 2016 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese (White Capsule) opens with beautifully ripe and elegant fruit intertwined with reductive and flinty notes with crunchy slate aromas. Silky, lush and seamless on the palate, this is a highly finessed and elegant Spätlese with stimulating balance and super fine tannin structure. It is the most elegant, balanced and perhaps also the most classic Mosel Spätlese in the dry style. The finish is clear, fresh and very salty—a crystalline and persistent Sonnenuhr of great class.See detailed press review
