  • About this winery

At heart, Catena is a story about family. Family who poured their lives, passion and spirit into transforming scrub-laden desert into some of the most beautiful and unique vineyards in the world. Family that passed their knowledge from generation to generation, blending collective memory with state-of-the-art science from the new world of viticulture. Family who, through risk-taking, faith and a little luck, transformed their treasured Mendoza terroir into the fountainhead of the award-winning...

  • Viticultural notes

60% of the grapes in this vintage are selected from the Nicasia Vineyard, and 40% from the Angélica Vineyard.

  • Winemaking notes

20% whole cluster and 80% whole berry fruit is hand- loaded into 225-500 liter new French oak barrels for a 30-day fermentation. The fermentation temperature is kept low and the cap management is done by hand to ensure soft, gentle flavors and tannin extraction. Wild yeasts are used with malolactic fermentation also in barrel. The wine is aged in French oak for 18 months.

    March 2019

Lots of blackberry and blueberry aromas with licorice, too. Extremely aromatic. Full-bodied, layered and deep. Superb richness and balance, at the same time. Really great.

The 2017 Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino mixes grapes from 60% Altamira (Nicasia) and Lunlunta and shows a little riper than the pure Altamira from Nicasia vineyard. There is a note of raspberry that gives brightness to the aromas, and the palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a fluid sensation that is quite remarkable...

    Stephen Tanzer, September 2019

Sexy scents of red and black fruits, coffee and herbs. Dense, juicy and fine-grained, conveying terrific energy to its flavors of currant, chocolate and mocha (..) it has the dusty tannins and fresh supporting acidity to reward aging. In the early going, its penetrating character reminds me a bit of Cabernet.
